The Mining Governance and Growth Support Project (MGGSP) was a five-year Project. The Project was financed by a loan in the amount of SDR16.1million (Approximately US$25 million) from International Development Association (IDA) of the World Bank and a grant of 4.1 Million Euros (Approximately US$6 million) in co-financing from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) of the European Union making a total of about US$31 million. The Project was developed by the Malawi Government (GoM), pursuant to the desire of diversifying its agriculture-based economy with mining which was noted to have had a huge potential for economic growth and development. The Project was approved by the Bank Board on March 31, 2011 and Malawi National Assembly in June 2011. It became effective on August 23, 2012 and was officially launched by the former Head of State, Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda on Jan 22, 2013.

The overall coordination and management of the Project was carried by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Energy and Mining (MNREM) while implementation of the Project was undertaken by key implementing institutions which are Geological Survey Department (GSD); Department of Mines (DOM); of Environmental Affairs Department (EAD); Ministry of Finance, Economic Planning and Development (MoFEPD); Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST); Chancellor College (CHANCO); The Polytechnic and Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).
