Mineral Exploration Division

This division is tasked with exploration and evaluation of mineral deposits at all scales. It comprises three sections which are Geochemical Exploration, Geophysical Exploration and Mineral Evaluation and Economic Geology. In future an addition of Petroleum Exploration Section in this division is anticipated.

Geochemical Exploration Section

This section devotes itself to understanding the geochemistry and mineralogy of various geological samples through systematic exploration, sampling and analyses of rocks, soils, stream sediments and water samples. Analytical equipment currently in use includes the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AAS), the portable X – Ray Fluorescence spectrometer (XRF), UV – VIS Spectrometer and X – Ray Diffraction (XRD).

Geophysical Exploration Section

This section is entrusted with all exploration activities where physical phenomena such as density contrasts, magnetism and electrical conductivity of various rock bodies are measured. Geophysical exploration that GSD usually undertakes includes measurement of potential fields through gravity and magnetic surveys and also carries out radiometric surveys. The available ground geophysical equipment at the Survey was acquired around 1980’s after the 1984/85 airborne geophysical survey which with the current trends may not be state of the art equipment. Currently, available geophysical maps include 1:1,000,000 gravity anomaly maps; 1:250,000; 1:100,000 and 1:50,000 of various signatures.

Mineral Evaluation and Economic Geology Section

In conjunction with the above sections, this section deals with an in depth assessment and evaluation of mineral deposits. It is this section which houses the drilling subsection within the Department. Drilling services may be hired out upon request.
